Rand Slam is one of the best MCs born from the Indonesian hip hop generation today since hip hop has established its popularity in the country since 4 decades ago and entered its best era in the past 3-5 years. One of the markers is the emergence of a new generation of MCs who are paying attention with passionate on the physical side which more or less begins to provide progress and a new color spectrum for hip hop.

Rand Slam was born and grew up in Jayapura until graduating from high school in 2010. While still on the easternmost island of Indonesia, he knew hip-hop. His introduction was completely accidental, Rand Slam, who at that time was still in the middle of junior high school, had just bought the Nokia N-Gage Classic. As soon as he explored his new cellphone, he found "Nuthin 'But a G Thang" owned by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The rest was history from Jayapura to Jakarta and onwards to Bandung, together with Senartogok, they pioneered managing a collective-based record label, Def Bloc and Morgue Vanguard of Grimloc Records, gave inputs. Def Bloc then became a home for Rimajinasi, as well V/A Pretext for Bumrush.

9051 CD

The album, 9051 from the rapper named Randi Ismail is a follow-up journal from the line of attraction he left in his previous work, three EPs (Vocabulary, 2016), (Johan EP, 2017), (Prima Johan, 2018) and the phenomenal long debut of Rimajinasi ( 2017). Quoted from the press release, 9051 is an album that has a darker nuance compared to Rand Slam's previous works or specifically 9051 is a hip hop album that features 12 brutal dialogues about searching for identity, questions about social inequality, nationalism, relations between races and of course about the extent to which Indonesian can be explored in hip hop. "On this album he maximizes hip hop as his depressive catharsis space, as well as his disgust and political expression which is a direct and indirect reflection of the socio-political atmosphere in the country.

The gloom in 9051 is suspected to have come from Rand Slam's background and journey as a descendant of Makassar, born and raised in Papua and then he decided to bond his soul in the land of Java. With this journey, Rand Slam then produced a variety of narratives wrapped in rhymes bravado of personal and political anger. The glooms of 9051 are in fact complemented by the eclectic polish of the sonic era of hip hop era music in the early 90s. The majority of this palette is sourced from the cold hands of producers occupied by Morgue Vanguard and Jaydawn. The rest, 9051 also got a touch of scratching game from DJ Evil Cutz, guest sewers rhyme from Iblis Leksikon, Krowbar on one song, Jason Ranti, to the contribution of one of the best local beatmakers; Densky9.

Another important note, the 9051 album also features an eccentric cover. Captured by photographers Bakar Barak and Bombtai, his character revives the news that there are weapons and other news that are no less powerful than this album and therefore become very worthy of your collection. In short, 9051 is an album with a very artistic gloom and makes this artform can no longer be underestimated in the local music scene.

Rimajinasi was released in 2017. More than that, it was able to reach the ears of mass media and get a positive response, one of them is Rolling Stone Indonesia. As well as being named the best album of 2017 by Vice Indonesia and Warning Magazine. Aside from being named the best local hip-hop album for 2017 by the three media at the start, Rimajinasi experienced significant sales. In an era where the power of consumption of physical releases faded and the fact that hip-hop still became community music. Rimajinasi have six collaborators: Instinc, Juta, Matter Mos, Strike The Head, Joe Million, and Senartogok who contributed a lot of input. The six names are the people who according to Rand Slam have the same vision in working.

Prior the release of Rimajinasi, Johan EP was self released few months before that, with 7 incredible beat tracks tagged alongside with Rand Slam's unique emceeing, introducing this EP as the pre-Rimajinasi production works.
