Dried herbs packed in mengkuang leave and housed in woven leave packaging
Jogjakarta’s Senyawa uniquely manage to embody the aural flavoursof Javanese music whilst exploring the framework of experimentalmusic practice, pushing the boundaries of both traditions.
Their first full length was named Acaraki, or herbalist ( herb mixer and combiner), a profession that was mentioned in the old Madhwapura inscription from Majapahit period, as one of the professions that were occupied during that time. The combination of herbs is now known as jamu, healthy and traditional mixed herbs, ready to be boiled and drink.
And jamu has became an important elements for Indonesians for centuries, even nearby Jogjakarta where Senyawa is based at, the bas-reliefs on Borobudur depict images of people grinding something with stone mortar and pestle, drink sellers, physicians and masseuse treating their clients.
